Creating a custom preference center with tokens

A Mautic preference center lets contacts choose what they want to hear about and how often they want to hear from you. They can manage things like communication channels, message frequency, and topics of interest. Giving people this control usually makes the experience better for them and can help improve engagement, since they receive content that actually matches their interests.

For example, someone might sign up for weekly updates about one product category instead of receiving every general marketing email.

Info

Think of it as a way for customers to unsubscribe from specific email topics without opting out of everything your company sends.

Steps

  1. Go to Components > Landing pages in Mautic, then create a new landing page.
  2. Name the landing page with a clear, relevant title.
  3. In the landing page settings, enable the preference center option.
  4. Open the Builder.
  5. Adjust the page design so it matches the look and feel you want.
  6. Add the available tokens for preference options such as channels, categories, and segments.
    • Add a Text block.
    • In the window that opens, choose the Insert token dropdown.
    • Add {segmentlist} to show segment options.
    • Use {categorylist} to let contacts choose categories.
    • If you contact people through more than one channel, add {preferredchannel} so they can choose their preferred one.
    • Add {saveprefsbutton} so contacts can save their choices.
  7. Style the preference center as needed, including colors, fonts, and segment descriptions.
  8. Save the landing page.
  9. Set this landing page as the preference center for your emails.

Success

Test it by sending an email with the unsubscribe link pointing to the custom landing page. You can also use the Preview link on the landing page details screen.

Warning

If the custom preference center does not appear, check that the right options are enabled in both the landing page settings and the email configuration.

Results

  • Contacts can view and update their communication preferences in your customized preference center.
  • Your emails include a link to the customized preference center.

Success

When you customize the preference center, consider using forms if contacts need to manage tags. This can be helpful for teams with more complex newsletter segmentation. Tags work well for newsletter subscriptions, while custom fields may be a better fit for more advanced unsubscribe setups.
